Public Sleep/ Sleep Over invites participants to spend the night with
artists. The dancers will dance a pillow close to
you. Live video, sound artists and dancers will perform solos all night
to examine how our sensibility and energy
re-shape in order to suspend "performance" overnight while tuning in
to an environment that is intimate and quiet.
The participating artists are Charles Cohen (sound), Sarah Michelson
(dance), Michael Portnoy (dance), and koosil-ja
(dance and live video), and Geoff Matters (sound and live video). There
will be a video installation and for which
Matters will perform "Detuned chromatic cycles" - an array of solid
colors slowly shifting through dozens of related
palettes simultaneously displayed on many screens. Please bring
whatever
you need to feel comfortable sleeping
over. Chai and snacks are available at the Kiosk all night.
Public Sleep/Sleep Over has received funding from The Experimental
Television Center's Presentation Funds Program, which is
supported
by the New York State Council on the Arts, a public agency.

These concerts and workshops will bring together
musicians
mostly from the mid-atlantic states, with two
international guests, and give them an opportunity to
play together in diverse combinations. There will be a private
workshop for musicians on Sat. afternoon, making the
entire weekend an experience of collective exploration for
these players, many of whom will be meeting for the
first
time. These are all veteran improvisers, known for their
consistent ability to explore the unknown and delight
audiences.
The music they will be exploring is not only freely
improvised,
but moving towards a form of improvisation rarely
heard in Philadelphia. In europe it is called
"reductionism"
and in the states it is often referred to as "lowercase"
music. These labels, however, are not meant to define
what we will do, only give you some indication of our
direction. What you might expect is a music of quiet
dynamics--at times barely a whisper--and a slower pace of
sustained textures and spaces. If the heart-based beat
or pulse is hard to find in free jazz, here it is practically
non-existent, slowed to the length of a long breath.
This is a music focused on sound, exploring its sensuality and
opening the imagination of the listeners.

AfroSocialiteLifeDiva tells the stories of mothers and daughters, the
merging
of personalities, the
influence of families, sexualities and otherworldly sources to create
one
bad-ass woman, able to move
time and space to suit her needs. Is she just a woman? or a superhero?
In her signature mix of text,

Thursday April 29 1999 Leno's Mutual Admiration
Society, the radical queer salon, will be 7:30pm at the A Space, 4722
Baltimore
Ave (for more infocall 215.724.7535.)
It's an open-to-all free-improv, noise/multi-media
jam session salon this time, facilitated by Charles.
Leno sez: "When I asked for people to show up, I
wanted ANY-ONE who identifies as queer to attend. Those who don't own
bars
or have much fun in them. Those who don't look like the models in
tele-personal
ads or want to. Those who don't have the luxury of celebrating
diversity
but must live it. The demo-graphic breakdown of the first Society
gathering
was seven men, three women, one African-American, one Latino and four
teens.
Its my vision that diversity is the strength of M.A.S. That means more
women, seniors, people of color, transgendered, even heteros who
identify
as queer. This is not an effort to be P.C., but to be practical."
